Why did I choose Carolina?

It's simple. UNC is the best, literally! This institution has the capacity to change so many lives of the students who attend and I was one of them. Originally, I entered UNC as a pre-med major in undergrad. However, after taking a sociology course my sophomore year, I found a new area of interest to explore.

My interest for sociology took off quickly and after discussing my interests with my professors during their office hours, I was advise to look into the field of social work. Over the next two years, I completed my bachelor's in sociology with a minor in social and economic justice, with the thought of social work still in the back of my mind.

After graduating, I decided to explore the field of social work by working in a rural department of social services as a social worker, a foster care social worker in fact and it was then that I found my niche. A year later I entered the MSW program at UNC as a NC Child Welfare Scholar. Since that time, my passion for social work and child welfare continues to grow as I am challenged to apply material from class to real world applications.

Last year was great, I feel like I grew a lot as a professional as well as a student. I was exposed to public administration concepts in a macro course and decided to explore that field as well. Now I am a dual-degree candidate in social work and public administration. And I LOVE IT!

I really feel that UNC has the potential to challenge students to find out more about who they really are and where they fit with respect to service to others. I really appreciated the advice and nurturing that I received from so many of the faculty here as I was molded into the professional that I am today.

So would I recommend UNC to a prospective student? Well, the answer is YES, because in my eyes, if you want to be the best, you have to be exposed to the best, and the best reside here at UNC.
